The header ditch is about 3 feet deep and has a large perforated pipe in the bottom. It was filled with gravel and then some wood chips on the top so it wouldn't be an open ditch. Water still goes into it and presumably there is quite a bit of water in it which can still be drawn upon. Even in summer, it should be collecting some of the irrigation runoff from parts of the property. Tom calls this a "filled pond". The pipe at the bottom has two risers which can be used to see what's going on inside or to put in a pump. However we have not been checking to see how much water is in it. We would need the pump itself and some kind of distribution system, possibly just a place to connect a hose. The pump could be solar, wired in or a hand pump. It would be especially nice for the little bit of watering we need to do in the winter when the outside irrigation water is turned off, as well as getting some free water.
